Nothing says summer quite like the crackle of a campfire.
While Smores may be the staple of camp snacking, there are countless recipes to try over an open flame. Heres our list of our top 10 favorites:
- Cobbler: This can be peach, apple, cherry or whatever. All you really need is a Dutch oven. Empty two 21-ounce cans of fruit filling in the bottom of the oven. Cover with Bisquick batter and put the oven right on the flames. Takes about 30 minutes.
- Strawberry Shortcake: Prepare the Bisquick shortcake recipe in two greased pie tins. Cover with aluminum foil and place on the hot coals. Back for 25 minutes, then add strawberries and whipped cream.
- Banana Boat: Slice an unpeeled banana lengthwise without cutting through the bottom peel. Open it and fill it with marshmallows, chocolate, butterscotch, caramel or whatever youd like. Press the filling into the banana and wrap it with tin foil. Cook in the coals of the campfire away from the flames for 10 minutes.
- Stuffed Apples: Core an apple and fill with your favorites, such as peanut butter, marshmallows, chocolate, caramel or brown sugar. Wrap in tin foil and bake in coals for 10 minutes.
- Bacon Smores: Bacon seems to be a craze, so why not add it to the classic campfire treat? Thisll give smores a saltier spin.
- Cinnamon Rolls: Cut oranges in half and gut them. Use Pillsbury cinnamon roll dough, and place one in each orange. Put them on a baking sheet and cover with tin foil. Bake, then add icing and enjoy.
- Campfire Cones: Fill regular sugar ice cream cones with peanut butter, marshmallows, chocolate chips, banana and anything else youd like in it. Wrap it in aluminum foil and throw it on hot coals for a few minutes until everythings melted.
- Orange Brownies: Cut the top off a large orange and scoop out the insides. Fill with brownie or cake batter, recap it and put it in aluminum foil. (You only want it 2/3 the way filled). Bake for a few minutes (depending on your fire and where you place them in the fire).
- Popcorn: This is basic and easy, but popcorn is fantastic and fun to make wherever you are. Seal the edges tightly, but leave a lot of slack so it can expand. Add oil, then seal and bake in the fire. Add seasoning or butter when its done popping.
- Peach Marshmallows: Cut peach in half and fill with butter, marshmallows and cinnamon. Wrap in foil and cook for five minutes. Open and top with other desired toppings (chocolate, berries, cheese, etc.) and enjoy.
