Hershey Gardens is going to the birds. Well, sort of. Next summer’s exhibit, "For the Birds" will feature dozens of colorful, handmade birdhouses. Whether made by a child or a professional artist, all eligible birdhouses will be accepted as part of this distinctive contest and exhibit.
"Participants in the contest can create their own unique birdhouse, and then see it on display in the Gardens," says Tammy Harris, special events coordinator. "We want everyone to have fun with their house."
Entries must be from one of three birdhouse categories: functional, whimsical or "green." The functional category includes birdhouses that are habitable to a variety of Pennsylvania birds. The whimsical category is for those entrants who want to be imaginative and creative. And for those who want to "go green," they can enter a birdhouse made of recycled or natural products.
The contest will feature winners in four categories and age divisions: youth (ages 5-9), junior (ages 10-17), adult (18 years and older) as well as business/association. Prizes will also be awarded in other categories including "Best of Show," "People’s Choice" and "First 'Occupied' House."
Birdhouse entries are due in late March. After judging is complete, all birdhouses that meet category criteria will be featured in the "For the Birds" exhibit at Hershey Gardens, opening May 1, 2010.
"The result of the contest will be a fun, eclectic mix of birdhouses for visitors to enjoy," Harris says. "Coupled with the Gardens’ natural beauty, it’ll be a great summer."
The contest entry fee is $25 per birdhouse and includes one complimentary ticket to Hershey Gardens for the 2010 season. For more information and official contest rules, please visit HersheyGardens.org.
