Every kid birthday party is different — indoors, outdoors, five guests, 55 guests, boys, girls, Army theme, princess theme. But one thing's for sure — at some point they'll be playing birthday GAMES. Here are some great game ideas — old and new — to help you survive the birthday games portion of your child's next party:
Balloon Battle – Divide the group into two teams. Tie the balloons to everyone's ankles. Say "go" and watch the teams trying to burst the other team's balloons first. The team with the last balloon wins. As your balloon is burst you withdraw from the game.
Bubble Walk – Walk on the bubble wrap without popping any! It's harder than it looks. Take a length of bubble wrap packaging material and let players take turns walking the length of the bubble wrap. The first one to walk the entire length without popping any bubbles is the winner.
Granny Grunt – Choose someone to be "IT" who is blindfolded and put in the middle of a circle with a broom in hand. "IT" tells all the players to move, then tells them to stop, spins around and sticks his/her broom handle out. The person nearest grabs it and "IT" says "granny grunt." The person grunts and whoever is "IT" tries to guess who the granny is. If the guess is correct, that person now becomes it in the middle.
Pinata – Children are blindfolded and they take a stick and try to break a hanging container that has goodies in it. You can do something as simple as decorating a paper grocery bag or make a fancier one using a balloon and paper mache.
Pin the “Something” on “Something” – Traditionally pin the tail on the donkey, this game can be changed to fit any theme. Blindfolded guests try to stick a paper 'tail' onto a poster of a donkey. You can take a piece of poster board and draw anything with something missing — a nose on a clown or animal, the TY heart on a beanie baby, a spaceship in an outer space scene, or give Yoda his staff.
Water Balloon Toss – Try to catch water balloons! With each successful catch move further and further apart. You win by being the furthest apart while still successfully catching the water balloon.
Candy Game – Blind fold three of the guests at a time and give them baskets. Put about 15 candies on the floor. The goal is to collect as many candies as possible in a few minutes. The child who gathers the most wins the game and candies as well.
Ice Drop – Teams have to pick up ice cubes with toothpicks and race to a bowl at the finish line. If an ice cube falls, it has to be picked up off the floor with the toothpicks. After each player drops their cube in the finishing bowl, they race back and tag the next player who then goes. First team to get all their ice cubes in their bowl wins!
Blindfold Cotton Ball Race — In this game the player needs to transfer as many cotton balls from one bowl to another using only a spoon in 30 seconds. The catch? They'll be blindfolded. The trick is that they are so light you can't really feel them on the spoon and this makes it hard. The winner is the player who transfers the most.
Bubble Contest – Give the kids a few minutes to choose their bubble-blowing device from a box of bubble-blowing items you've arranged beforehand. See who can blow the biggest bubble, the longest-lasting bubble. How about getting one bubble inside the other with the use of straws, and the tiniest bubble, etc.
Freeze Dance – Play fun music and dance, dance, dance. Stop the music and watch the funny poses. You can have kids get out if they don’t quite “freeze,” or just keep playing and stopping so everyone has fun. Fast or slow, music makes a party a party!
Limbo – Set up a bar that can be raised or lowered, or have two people hold the bar. Play some music in the background. Everyone must go under the bar without touching! You can also do this under a stream of water from a hose or try having a flashlight limbo game, where you turn off all the lights and use a flashlight as your limbo stick.
Balloon Race – Two teams stand in a line, one behind the other, give each team a balloon which the first person should pass through legs to the next person and so on. When the balloon gets to the last person, they run to the front of the line and start again. The winning team is the first one to get their starting person to the front again.
