The 80s are Back!

Alyssa Lehman

7/31/2009

Teenagers are picky, but understanding your teen’s fashion sense does not have to be painful. The same trends that were popular in the early 80s are once again in style.  Metallic and darker hues, like reds and blues, will be popular this fall. These items can be mixed-and-matched; scarves can add flair, as can a belt or sash. Chunky bangles and necklaces, costume brooches and over-the-top rings are bold fashion statements that your teens will love. Converse high-tops are stylish once again and your teen can even design their own one-of-a-kind pair online. The baggy jeans of yesterday are being replaced with more form-fitting jeans for both girls and boys. Skinny black jeans or funky leggings worn under a dress throughout winter can create look that is both fashionable and economical.

Dos and don’ts for stress-free shopping with your teen

•           Don’t leave the house without setting a budget and reviewing it with your teen.

•           Do be clear about what clothing you feel is appropriate.

•           Don’t rush your teen. Allow enough shopping time so that you and your teen will feel relaxed.

•           Do make sure your teen is wearing their everyday jewelry, make-up and hairstyle for trying on potential clothing.

•           Do let your teen bring along a friend; an opinion from a trusted peer is invaluable to your teen.

•           Don’t buy clothes that your teen has not tried on.

•           Do use a three-way mirror in the dressing room.

•           Don’t hesitate to shop in the children’s department for basic items like T-shirts and sweatshirts if your teen is on the smaller side.
