Let's be Thrifty Together

Love TV? Getting paid? Combine them!

Sep 17, 2012 - 08:41 AM

This blog also could’ve been titled, “How I’m getting my iPhone 5 for 64 percent off.”

Back in May, I discovered a really cool smartphone app. It lets me watch TV and get paid to do it. It’s called Viggle.

I’m going to preface this by saying Viggle isn’t as cool as it used to be. The company only started in January and has gained popularity. With increased users come decreased rewards. It’s unfortunate, but part of running a business. That said, you still get paid to watch TV.

Here’s how it works:

  • Download Viggle for your Android or iOS-enabled device (iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad). After you create an account, you can start “checking in” to shows. Just turn on the TV, hit the screen on your app and it’ll listen to the audio to recognize what show you are watching. (If it doesn’t work the first time, hit try again. After three tries without recognition, it’ll allow you to check in manually by searching for your show.)
  • Get points. For basic shows you’ll earn one point per minute (PPM) watched. There also are featured shows highlighted within the app. When you check in to these shows, you’ll get PPM and bonus points, which usually range from 50-200. You also can earn points by watching sponsored ads, playing games and answering trivia. Right now, there’s a game called MyGuy featured with pretty much every football game – both college and professional. It’s similar to fantasy football, and the winner of each game gets up to 1,000 Viggle points.
  • Earn rewards. Once you start earning points, you can redeem them for various rewards. The most popular rewards are gift cards to stores like Amazon, Best Buy, Sephora, CVS, Starbucks and Old Navy. You also can save up for bigger rewards like a Kindle Fire, iPod Touch and even a cruise. Gift cards worth $5 range from 10,000-12,500 points and most $25 gift cards are worth 62,500 points.

Using this app, I’ve saved up $130 in Best Buy gift cards that I’m using toward my iPhone 5. And that’s not including the rewards I’ve redeemed for Starbucks, Foot Locker and others. Granted, it’s gotten tougher to earn those rewards. I started when a Starbucks $5 gift card was just 7,000 points — an amount you could reach in just two days. Now, it’ll probably take you closer to a week or more to get a $5 gift card.

Again I say, you’re getting paid to watch TV. And it’s not hard and only as time-consuming as you want it to be. It’s worth checking out.

As a side note, I also recently discovered the app Jingit, which pays you for watching short ads on your phone or computer. You also can earn money by scanning products at a store. I’ve just started with it, but it looks pretty cool. Check that one out, too!
