Tales from a Mom-to-be
Playing the name game
We’re having a boy! We’re having a boy! I could chant it all day long.
For some parents-to-be, the next step—baby-naming—is the hardest task.
Fortunately, we agreed on names prior to knowing the gender of the baby, however arriving at those names wasn’t the easiest of decisions.
We didn’t spend dollars on a name book, and I know that I did not search for names on the internet. I knew if I had a little girl that without a doubt I would name her Carmen because that was my grandmother’s name and she was the most amazing women on the planet.
The boy names were what I struggled with. Bean Pole immediately said he wanted a “junior,” but I wasn’t so quick to agree, although if my husband remained adamant, I would have succumbed and had a little Bean Pole Jr.
But I offered my opinion and let it take its course. I told him that I felt strongly that a child should have a name of his/her own name to grow into.
So we humored ourselves and made lists of names for each gender, then traded lists and crossed off the ones we didn’t like on the lists to see what we had left.
Ultimately, I hated the names he had and he wasn’t so fond of the ones I had, either. It was back to the drawing board! We had a boy name we liked and like I said, we knew what the girl’s name was. We just wanted to make sure we kept our options open.
So when the day came and we discovered our little bundle of joy is a boy, we really needed to decide. I was so excited when Bean Pole came to me and said that he did indeed like the name I had suggested! Crisis averted! Now, it’s a waiting game to welcome our little Ryder into the world.
