Tales from a Mom-to-be

Divining gender

Aug 23, 2012 - 07:51 AM

What’s it gonna be—a he or a she?

We finally found out the gender of our baby. WOOHOO! It feels like it took forever.

We had tried all of the old wives tales and myths and sampled our way through the random tests to figure out the gender.

We tied my wedding band to a string and held it over my belly, as well as a needle. We tested the Ramzi theory which is based on the side of the tummy the baby is on, and we tested the skull theory which looks at the shape of the skull to decide.

A Chinese gender chart was fun to play with, and we even looked into the heart beat and whether it was high or low.

We guessed based on the foods I was craving and how I am carrying. It was a lot of fun to take the guesses.

Last week, we had a huge party tonight to reveal the gender of the baby to our family. It was a ton of fun and I think enjoyed by all. We began the party with yummy food prepared by family and friends. We then had a quiz prepared for our guests with questions aobut me and Bean Pole and how the pregnancy has been. After they took the quiz, the winners won a 10-second lead on the next part of the fun.

We split everyone into groups and, as I said before, the winners of the quiz got a 10-second lead on putting together a puzzle which was a picture of the ultrasound revealing the gender.  Everyone had a great time, and all of the grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins are thrilled!

Bean pole and I are now exhausted and heading to bed.

And oh, it’s a BOY!

Which gender divining methods have you tried and were they correct? Let me know!

About this Column

While trying to think of a creative way to introduce myself, the theme song to The Addams Family began playing in my head. While I can be “kooky,” I am not so sure I’m “spooky” or even “ooky” for that matter—whatever that may mean. I’ll look it up later.

My name is Brooke. I’m 28 years young and married to the love of my life (we’ll call him Bean Pole for future reference, because he’s really tall and kind of looks like Michael Phelps. I, however, am really, really short and, unfortunately, do not resemble anyone famous.)

We got married in September 2011 and are expecting a baby in January. We recently found out we are having a boy—which is good because Bean Pole, I am fairly confident, would send the baby back if he were a girl.

Meanwhile, I’m already a mommy to two beautiful miniature pinscher/toy terrier mixes, Zoey and Roost. I would save all the animals of the world if Bean Pole would let me but, alas, I am only allowed two pups.

I graduated from HACC with a degree in Humanities/Language and the Arts. I love music and musical theatre, and I love supporting my family and friends in their hobbies and interests. I really enjoy spending time with all of my family. I can’t wait to get to know you and your families as I share my experiences in being an expectant and new mother and, hopefully, you will leave comments or drop me a line now and then with your stories.
