Don't let them wander off
A recent online survey by the National Autism Association found 92 percent of the respondents said their autistic child was at risk of wandering. Deaths associated with autism wandering remain a leading cause of fatalities among children and adults with an autism spectrum disorder. The NAA and Unlocking Autism offer these tips to secure your home to prevent a child from slipping outside unnoticed:
• Install secure deadbolt locks that require keys on both sides.
• Install a home security alarm system.
• Place inexpensive battery-operated alarms on doors and windows to alert you when they are opened.
• Place hook and eye locks on all doors, above your child's reach.
• Fence your yard.
