Oct 25, 2012 - 06:55 AM

Led by a freshman speedster, the Cumberland Valley girls’ cross country team dominated the District 3 Class AAA championships Wednesday in Hershey.

Freshman Maddy Clahane took first with a time of 18:49, and teammates Carol Strock and Laura Barnes took fifth and eighth, respectively. CV won the meet overall with 61 points, 38 better than Governor Mifflin in second.

Not to be out done, the CV boys’ team also won the District 3 championship with senior Alec Kunzweiler leading the way. Kunzweiler took first at 16:35. The Eagles narrowly edged out Lower Dauphin for the title, 166-169.

Overall for the girls, CV, Governor Mifflin, Carlisle and Chambersburg all advance to states as a team. For the boys, CV, Lower Dauphin, Hershey and Hempfield advance. The top 24 runners in each advance individually.

Class AA

Big Spring’s Vinny Todaro edged out Annville-Cleona’s Shawn Wolfe for the District 3 Class AA individual title with a time of 16:35. Todaro has yet to lose a race this year.

Wolfe’s teammates, however, came through as Annville-Cleona took home the team title. York Suburban and Manheim Central round out the top three teams who qualify for states.

In the girls’ race, Palmyra’s Maria Tukis clipped Big Spring’s Emily Joyce by five seconds for first place for a time of 19:59. Tukis’ teammate Olivia Farabaugh was only 10 seconds behind as she finished in fourth place.

The Cougars won the team title with 49 points. Second-place York Suburban had 72. Wyomissing, with 150, will also make the trip to states.
