Field hockey finals are set

Nov 1, 2012 - 08:59 AM

With nearly 21 minutes remaining in their contest with Hempfield, Central Dauphin’s Katie Foran broke a tie with the eventual game-winning goal.

The Rams won 3-2 to advance to the District 3-AAA field hockey championship game. Central Dauphin held a 2-0 lead at halftime, but Hempfield scored a pair right after halftime. The Rams will play top-seeded Penn Manor, 3-1 winner over Lower Dauphin.

Also in Class AAA field hockey, Wilson and Twin Valley topped Cumberland Valley and Hershey, respectively, in the consolation bracket. They play Saturday for fifth place and a berth in states.

Lower Dauphin and Hempfield—who both qualified for states—will play Saturday for third.

In the District 3-AA tournament, Oley Valley edged Donegal, 1-0, to earn a berth in the title game against Greenwood, 3-2 winner over Hamburg. Brittany Fleisher scored the game-winner for Greenwood early in the second half.

In the consolation bracket, Palmyra and Susquehanna Twp. eliminated Milton Hershey and Lancaster Mennonite, respectively, to set up their matchup with a berth in states on the line. Hamburg and Donegal will meet for third place.

Girls volleyball

Hempfield, Exeter and Central York each won their District 3-AAA quarterfinal matches by sweep to advance to the semis. Cumberland Valley dropped its first set but swept the rest to advance.

CV will play Hempfield, while Exeter battles Central York in tonight’s semifinals.

In the Class AA tournament, Delone Catholic advanced to the semis to face Palmyra, while Brandywine Heights advanced to battle Berks Catholic—which upset No. 3 Trinity in five sets.

The Class A tournament got underway yesterday and will continue tonight and Friday. Dayspring Academy will play Columbia in the semis, while Mount Calvary Christian will face Halifax.

Looking ahead

The girls volleyball and all soccer tournaments continue tonight. The soccer tournaments will play on the same night due to Hurricane Sandy postponing Monday’s and Tuesday’s games. They are in the semifinals with the finals to be played Saturday.
