The best board game ever

Most people have a favorite board game that they remember from childhood. In my family, the game that saw the most action was Candy Land, by far. My sister and I would sit and spend hours pushing the little colored pieces around the game board hoping to win.

My wife and I recently made a trip to the Goodwill to peruse the aisles looking for good deals. As I meandered through the back of the store, I encountered one of the largest collections of board games I've ever seen. They had it all—Clue, checkers, Hi Ho Cherry-O, Chutes and Ladders, Yahtzee, Cranium, Apples to Apples, Scene it, Risk and, of course, Candy Land.

This wasn't just any standard version of Candy Land, however. It was the original version that I played as a kid. (If you buy Candy Land new in-store, you'll receive Hasbro's redesigned version with new graphics and characters. See pictures below).

Of course, wanting my own kids to play with the classic version some day, I purchased the game.

With so many new board games appearing each year in stores, many of the old classics are falling out of style or are receiving drastic makeovers. Just check out Amazon's current list of top-selling board games:

  1. Spot It
  2. The Settlers of Catan
  3. Perplexus Maze Game
  4. Qwirkle
  5. HedBanz

You won't find any classics in this list. My advice to parents who are seeking a classic game is to stop by your local thrift store. You just might find the original version of the game you're looking for.
