No place to sit
I have a new respect for the struggle parents must face as they move their families into a new home. Never did I expect that moving would take such considerable time and effort—and I’m only one person! Still, about 14 percent of families opt to relocate each year, and for all of those families planning a move, I recommend you watch out for one fatal mistake.
As I sat planning the move into a new apartment (two days in advance of course and with a bag of Fritos by my side for distraction), I did something that turned moving day into a humongous migraine. As I pored over the furniture measurements I had taken, I decided to cast them aside figuring this apartment is pretty big, everything should fit.
Moving day soon followed and it went fairly smoothly—at first. All of the basic furniture was muscled through the front door, and around noon I received a call from Big Lots that the couch we had ordered was on its way.
An hour later, the couch was being carried through the front door—and got stuck halfway. After much deliberation and several advanced Tetris-style maneuvers, we noticed an alternate ingress—the balcony.
With moving straps in hand, a team of highly skilled relatives and friends began to hoist the couch up onto the second-story wooden railing, where it teetered on the edge momentarily. Many a passerby stopped to gawk at the feat, and I’m pretty sure this is the reason we still haven’t met several of our new neighbors.
With a tug, the couch was seated safely onto the balcony floor. Success!
But the success was short lived. Despite more maneuvers, the couch wouldn’t fit through the living room doorway. In defeat, our team of relatives and friends slowly lowered the couch back down over the balcony, loaded it onto a truck and took it back to the store. Our new apartment remains couchless to this day. A futon should be making an appearance in the near future.
