Taking the whole family to the movies can be a rather costly proposition but there is still something to be said for the magic of seeing a film on the big screen.
2020 brings quite a few new kids movies to the theater – on average one per month – starting with three that might be worth checking out: Dolittle, opening on Jan. 8, Sonic the Hedgehog, opening Feb. 14 and My Spy, opening on March. 13.
It’s worth noting that there is conflicting information regarding the exact release dates on these films, with some reports saying to expect Dolittle as late as Jan. 17, so your best bet is to rely on your local listings when planning your movie outing.
In this latest telling of the Dolittle story, Robert Downey Jr. takes on the role of Dr. John Dolittle.
At the start of the film, the good doctor is living behind the high walls of his manor with only his animal friends for companionship. The adventure ensues when Queen Victoria becomes ill, prompting Dolittle and his friends to venture out from their secluded existence to try to cure her.
Sonic the Hedgehog
This movie based in the video game character, Sonic the Hedgehog, features the blue animated character trying to navigate life on Earth and his battles with the evil mad scientist Dr. Robotnik, played by Jim Carrey.
In this story, a clever 9-year-old girl manages to get a seasoned CIA agent, who was sent undercover to watch her family, to teach her how to become a spy in exchange for not blowing his cover. A battle of wits ensues.
Later this year will bring anticipated kids’ films like the live-action version of Disney’s Mulan, as well as two sequels: Trolls World Tour Movie, and Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway.
Some reports indicate that 2020 could also see the release of The War with Grandpa, based on the book of the same name by Robert Kimmel Smith. The movie was released in the United Kingdom in 2017 and its U.S. release was delayed for a variety of reasons. Featuring Robert DeNiro as grandpa, the film tells the story of a young boy who is forced to give up his room to his grandfather and the ridiculous pranks he plays to try to get the older man to leave.
