Celebrate the season with holiday shows in Central PA

There’s something magical about an outing to the theater during the holidays. And there are plenty of options to delight families, from ballet performances of the Nutcracker to seasonal musicals and plays.

Donetsk Ballet Company of Ukraine’s Nutcracker Ballet

This stunning performance of the holiday classic features 20 principal dancers and corps de ballet of the Donetsk Ballet of Ukraine as well as 90 local dancers, with hundreds of exquisite costumes from Ukraine and America. Tickets are $25-$32 for adults, and $20-$28 for students.

Performed by the dancers of Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, the beloved winter classic features larger-than-life sets and gorgeous costumes. The Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra will accompany the performances at the Hershey Theatre. Tickets are $25-$48 for the Whitaker Center; and $29-39 at the Hershey Theatre.

Midstate Ballet Presents the Nutcracker

Professional dancers will share the stage with York’s regional pre-professional youth ballet company to present the magical journey of Clara and her Nutcracker prince from an intense battle between toy soldiers and mice to the Kingdom of Snow and the Land of Sweets. When it turns out that Macy’s Santa may be the real Kris Kringle, a wave of love spreads across New York City that melts even the most cynical hearts.  Tickets are $26 for adults, $13 for students with ID.

The 2019 Christmas Show: Joy to the World

Evoking the holiday nostalgia of hometowns all across the US, the stage will transform into a small-town winter carnival brimming with family and friends. There will be lots of elves as well as dancing and singing, and grand moments galore. Tickets are $46 for adults, $23 for children.

The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Musical

Christmas Day approaches and uncertainty reigns. Matthew and Mary, the new owners of a thrift store, face seemingly insurmountable challenges, including a parent with dementia, a sister with control issues, some very nosy and noisy neighbors, and a painting of unknown value – all of which make for a few “bumps in the road” during the most wonderful time of the year. Tickets range from $17-$36.

Cinderella’s Christmas

The classic tale of Cinderella is presented in a holiday setting by Robert Brock, the theater’s artistic director, with marionettes he created. Arrive early to have a back stage tour of the theater and the John Durang Puppet Museum 20 minutes prior to curtain. The show is appropriate for children who can sit quietly for 35 minutes. Tickets are $15.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Twas the Night Before Christmas

Magic & Wonder: A Magical Merry Christmas

Master illusionist Brett A. Myers and his cast combine amazing illusions, comedy and holiday music. There’s also audience participation and live animals in this family-friendly show that spreads the Christmas spirit on a journey of joy, hope and celebration for all ages.
