Where to go tubing and skiing in Central Pennsylvania


It’s officially winter, so bundle up and hit the slopes–with skis, or an inner tube. Here’s a rundown of where you can go to make the most of the season. Note: be sure to call or visit the website before heading out, to make sure the slopes are open.

 

SKIING

Blue Mountain Resort
1660 Blue Mountain Drive, Palmerton

Costs: Lift tickets, $30-$60. Rentals (all equipment, including polls and helmet), $40. Various ski classes based upon abilities available for kids ages 4-14; costs $104-$124 per session.

Liberty Mountain Resort

Costs: Lift tickets, 4 hours, $55-$62; 8 hours, $57-$75; extended, $59-$67; night, $42-$49. Rentals: $53; helmet: $14; all-inclusive rentals for ages 5 and youngr, $20. Ski lessons for kids ages 4-10 in the Children’s Learning Center include 4 or 8-hour lift ticket, equipment, and 2-hour lesson; costs range from $90-$125. Classes for first-time skiers, ages 8 and older, start at $55 for non-peak times.

Shawnee Mountain Ski Area

Costs: Lift tickets, $42-$65; night, $35; children 46” tall or shorter, free with paying adult. Rentals: $40; helmet $15. Three-hour classes for children ages 4-15 include rentals, lift tickets, lessons and snacks, $110.

Ski Roundtop

Costs: Lift tickets, 4 hours, $56-$64; 8 hours, $61-$69; extended day, $67-$77; night, $42-$49. Rentals: $45; helmet $12. Ski packages for kids ages 4-12, various levels, includes lift ticket, rental equipment and helmet, and lesson; costs range from $70-$102. Learn to ski packages for ages 13 and older, $77-$111.

Whitetail

Costs: Lift tickets, 4 hours, $54-$72; 8 hours, $59-$77; extended, $65-$82; night, $41-$48. Rentals: $54, children 5 and younger, $20; helmets $14. Classes for ages 4+, all skill levels, $52. Additionally, half-day or full-day skiing camp for kids 4-12, includes rentals, helmet, lift ticket and 2-hour lesson, $115-$175.

*NEARLY FREE* SKIING FOR 4TH & 5TH GRADERS!
Fourth and fifth graders can ski and snowboard for free with a paying adult through the PA Snowpass program. They’ll receive one free Learn to Ski/Board Package and three coupons for a complimentary children’s lift ticket at any of the 19 participating resorts in PA. SNOWTUBING

Blue Mountain Resort

Hours: Sun.-Sat., 5-8 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. sessions. Sat.-Sun. & holidays—including week between Christmas and New Year’s—three-hour sessions between 8 a.m.-9 p.m.
Costs: evening sessions, $25 (not valid over holidays); daytime sessions, $37.
Snowtubing opened for the season Sat., Dec. 22.

AvalancheXpress
Snow Tubing at Heritage Hills Resort

Hours: Mon.-Fri., 4-10 p.m.; Fri. 4-11 p.m.; Sat. & holidays, 9 a.m.-11 p.m.; Sun. 10 a.m.-10 p.m.
Eight tubing lanes, but no kiddie hill option.
Costs: $10-$35, depending upon date and time. See website for details.

Camelback Mountain
107 Resort Drive, Tannersville

Hours: Mon.-Thurs., 9 a.m.-8 p.m., Fri.-Sat., 9 a.m.-10 p.m.; Sun. 8 a.m.-9 p.m.
Costs: 30-hour sessions, $30 Mon.-Thurs., $35 Fri.-Sun.
With 42 lanes, it’s worth the drive. Beginning at 5 p.m. each night, there’s “Galactic Snowtubing” with an LED light show.

Iron Valley Tubing

Anticipates opening for the season Dec. 26, but check website to confirm.
Hours: 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Christmas week; regular schedule is Wed. & Thurs., 5-9 pm., Fri. 5-10 p.m., Sat. 9 a.m.-10 p.m., Sun. 11 a.m.-7 p.m.
Costs: $8-$32
15 tubing lanes, and kids must be at least 40” tall to ride the big hill; there are two “kiddie hills” available.

Tubing at Boulder Ridge

14 lanes for their large runs and kids need to be 5 or older to ride. There’s a kiddie hill for those 4 and under, which does not have a tow rope or lift.
