Polar playgrounds for winter fun in Central PA

 There’s plenty of frozen fun in our region. And you don’t even have to wait for Mother Nature to cooperate, as the resorts make their own snow and the ice rinks are indoors.



AvalancheXpress Snow Tubing at Heritage Hills Resort

Eight tubing lanes, but no kiddie hill option.

Camelback Mountain

Costs: $25 all-day tubing Mon.-Thurs., $35 for 3-hour blocks Fri.-Sun.
42 lanes, it’s worth the drive. Beginning at 5 p.m. each night, there’s “Galactic Snowtubing” with an LED light show.

Iron Valley Tubing

Blue Mountain Resort

Costs: Lift tickets, $41-$70, $10 for ages 5 and under. Rentals (all equipment, including polls and helmet), $40. Various ski classes based upon abilities available for kids ages 4-14; costs average $100 per session.

Liberty Mountain Resort

Costs: Lift tickets, 4 hours, $52-$68; 8 hours, $57-$75; extended, $62-$80; night, $41-$48. Rentals: $52; helmet: $14. Ski lessons for kids ages 4-10 in the Children’s Learning Center include 4 or 8-hour lift ticket, equipment, and 2-hour lesson; costs range from $90-$125. Classes for first-time skiers, ages 8 and older, start at $49 for non-peak times.

Shawnee Mountain Ski Area
401 Hollow Road, East Stroudsburg
Costs: Lift tickets, $42-$65; night, $35; children 46” tall or shorter, free with paying adult. Rentals: $40; helmet $15. Three-hour classes for children ages 4-15 include rentals, lift tickets, lessons and snacks, $110.

Ski packages for kids ages 4-12, various levels, includes lift ticket, rental equipment and helmet, and lesson; costs range from $77-$106. Learn to ski packages for ages 13 and older, $75-$98.

Additionally, half-day or full-day skiing camp for kids 4-12, includes rentals, helmet, lift ticket and 2-hour lesson, $115-$175.

Fourth and fifth graders can ski and snowboard for free with a paying adult through the PA Snowpass program. They’ll receive one free Learn to Ski/Board Package and three coupons for a complimentary children’s lift ticket at any of the 19 participating resorts in PA.
